Mission Statement: Prodigal Ministries is a faith based aftercare program helping men and women (our clients) avoid prison return. Prodigal offers love, training and motivation through rigorous programs and disciplined living in residential housing centers. Through role modeling and mentoring programs, it engenders a strong desire and motivation toward purposeful, focused living, fostering self-respect and a sense of accomplishment. By encouraging and enabling education, it equips clients with skills for employment and self-support. Recovery from addictive illness is promoted, including active participation in Twelve Step programs. Prodigal accepts men and women, Christians and non-Christians. While Prodigal's mission is focused on lower recidivism rates, the mission includes discipling clients in Christ.

About Us

Prodigal Ministries has been described as the cutting edge for offender reentry programming and having a "holistic approach" to assisting felons. The Prodigal staff can realistically address prison aftercare because of their combined previous experience with the Kentucky Department of Corrections. Our staff has over 85 years of experience and over 10 years of establishment within the community, which includes over 5 years of residential programming. They have assisted the KY- DOC with pre-release services within the prisons for parolees and inmates who have served their entire sentence. Prodigal Ministries trains church members and volunteers to help offenders prior to release and after their release into the community. This instills a disciplined, spiritual lifestyle that makes transitioning easier in terms of housing, family issues, addictions, employment, medical and mental health.

PRODIGAL MINISTRIES STRIVES TO LOWER RECIDIVISM BY:

Mentoring Train and assign volunteer mentors to work as active role models providing guidance and support to offenders while incarcerated and through their release transition.

Transitional Housing

Prodigal House for men has been in operation since October 2002, providing a safe, transitional home for eight men released from jails or prisons in Louisville, KY. Prodigal moved its men's location to Oak Street in December 2007.

The McCauley House for women has been in operation since September 2005 providing a safe, transitional home for seven females and one Resident Manager in Crestwood, KY. Prodigal opened this home in memory of Jean McCauley Brown.

Prodigal Ministries purchased a third house in January 2007. We are currently in the process of renovating this house to open in the very near future for additional fifteen male clients.

Programming

Our program begins during our client's incarceration. They are referred by Correctional Staff, Probation & Parole, the Drug Court, volunteers, mentors, and family members.
A client assessment is done and a review of the individual's criminal history before acceptance into the program. This journey begins with a weekly visit where goals and expectations are developed. Staff and the client's mentor pickup the client upon release and transport them to their new home.

A room is prepared and all of their essentials are provided. The Program Director and Case manager work as a team in working towards each client transitional goals. Their identification cards (i.e. social security card, state issued identification) are at the top of the list. All clients will have obtained a high school diploma or GED, or be involved in classes working toward that goal. Each client maintains a weekly attendance verification sheet documenting program meetings, contact with mentors/volunteers, the 12 - Step Program progress, and a personal evaluation of their progress. Every client is required to complete a Chemical Dependency Assessment and agree to an assessment evaluation by an addiction specialist as well as following any recommendations. Weekly community service is required for all clients.

Meaningful employment is necessary for complete mental health stability, particularly as a source of livelihood, self-esteem, and a sense of accomplishment. Clients are required to seek employment to assist in their self-support.
